Golfing at Copperwynd

Sunridge Canyon Golf Club

Sunridge Canyon is located directly across the street from the Copperwynd Resort(see map).  In fact, the owner of the Sunridge Canyon Golf Club is a Copperwynd Villa owner himself, so special rates are availble to Copperwynd Guests from time to time.

From its secluded urban desert setting on the eastern slope of the McDowell Mountain range, architect Keith Foster lays out a memorable golf experience at SunRidge Canyon Golf Club. In the foothills separating Scottsdale and Fountain Hills, this robust golf course descends dramatically through one canyon and ascends through an adjacent ravine. Elevation shifts, natural outcroppings, and an expertly devised strategy from this commanding layout so deftly designed by Foster challenges the big sticks but gives higher handicappers room to play.

The panoramic view at the turn extends beyond the Verde River Valley to the Valley’s prominent landmarks: Four Peaks and the Superstition Mountains.

From the short opening par 4 and the lengthy par-3 Number 8 hole to the demanding 18th green setting, the imaginative routing invites a test of every level of golf as it eases delicately through the natural surroundings.

Playing to 6,823 yards, SunRidge Canyon delivers challenges only a low handicapper can appreciate. Respectful of its daring taunts, Arizona’s most active tournament players rank SunRidge Canyon as one of their favorite competitive tracks. Foster’s course strategies proved challenging enough to catch the attention of the United States Golf Association, which chose SunRidge Canyon as the site for the 1997 USGA State Team Championship. At par 71, SunRidge Canyon is heroic, especially as it makes the turn and heads uphill toward the clubhouse where the last six holes set up a finish to remember.

Every hole plays favorably from nearly every area of the fairway. The overall strategy encourages a balance of strength and length with finesse and patience. Water guards the green on the par-3 Number 14. The par-5 Number 16 is a tremendous uphill approach to an elevated green, and the par-4 Number 18 without question requires the best drive any player can muster.

Eagle Mountain Golf Club

Located only one mile from Copperwynd, sprawling vistas, captivating elevation changes, and award winning golf are what you can expect at Eagle Mountain Golf Club.  In fact, in the year it opened, 1996, the course was celebrated as the best new public golf course by the Arizona Republic.  Since then Golf World honored Eagle Mountain as one of the "Top 50 Public Golf Courses in the Country", and Golf Digest awarded Eagle Mountain 4.5 stars out of 5.

Located in Fountain Hills, Eagle Mountain Golf Club pitches and rolls with the dramatic topography of the property. The McDowell Mountains rise up from the desert floor dividing Scottsdale to the west from Fountain Hills to the east.  The golf course weaves its way around these craggy mountain peaks and through shady dessert arroyos loaded with mesquite palo verde and saguaro cacti, making Eagle Mountain the quintessential Sonoran Desert track.  The views from the golf course are stunning with the entire southeastern Valley of the Sun on display.

A good example of Eagle Mountain's rugged appeal lies on the back nine.  The tee box on the par-4 Number 18 marks the highest point on the golf course with the fairway situated some 400 feet below.  The view from this perched position is spectacular, especially when the afternoon sunshine sets nearby Red Mountain ablaze.  As you take in this stunning vista, it is easy to see why many consider Number 18 as one of the best finishing holes in the area.

To complete the experience, Eagle Mountain Golf Academy offers golf schools, clinics, corporate outings and private lessons under the direction of one of Arizona's most highly regarded golf instructors, Derek Nannen.

Professional managed by OB Sports Golf Management - the folks who also manage Long Bow Golf Club and We-Ko-Pa Golf Club(only a 10-minute drive from Copperwynd)  - you can count on the same great course conditions and customer service standards that put these clubs on the Phoenix must-play list.
